Resources for people with disabilities including Autism were once very rare, expensive and hard to come by. Now with the existence of smartphones and tablets, resources are for more easier for everyone to access especially those with disabilities and Autism. Down below, is a selection of apps and other technological resources selected by Aspie Heroes that can help you in a variety of situations (All pictures belong to me except for "Smart Speaker" picture).

Antistress

For people who stim, a natural action done by autistic people to reduce stress and have nothing physical to stim with, then this app is for you.

Antistress provides various mini games such as pen clicking and bubble wrap popping, games around stimming activities. As it is an electronic app(on a phone) you can stim as long as you like without worrying about running out of stuff such as bubble wrap and can turn the volume off if the app is too loud for those around you.

Calendar

For people who need help keeping track of various dates and tasks that come up in life and reduce the chance of being caught off guard by an unknown event.

The iOS and Android Calendar apps might look different but they offer the same basic uses of tracking dates and scheduling events/appointments. These apps can even remind you when events/appointments are happening and even note the locations of where they will take place. Calendar apps already come pre-installed into all smartphones and tablets, so try to make best use of them.

Chamy - Colour by Numbers

For people who need to something relaxing and stimulating to do that isn’t complicated.

Chamy is a simple and easy to use paint by number app. After you find a picture that you like, you will see the picture as a different set of numbered areas. All you have to do, is select the colour from the numbered colour palette and colour in the areas of the same number, it’s fun and as simple as that.

Habitica

For people who want to get themselves into good habits and want to keep up with your daily todo’s then this app is for you.

The great thing about Habitica is that it turns tracking your habits and todos into an rpg video game. Habitica uses the reward system from rpg video games such as gold, weapons and armour to reward you for sticking to your habits and completing your daily and todo lists.

My Noise

For people who find themselves in stressful situations sometimes created by overwhelming loud noises who are looking for a way to calm down and focus themselves.

myNoise is an ambient sound app which gives you access various ambiences such as waterfalls and forests. Each ambience has a volume mixer which means you can adjust the volume of each individual piece of the ambience such as reducing the volume of the birds in a forest ambience or the sounds of footsteps walking by a waterfall ambience.

Pokémon Go

For people who find it hard to be outgoing and want to motivate themselves to get out more.

Pokémon Go is an MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) which unlike a typical MMORPG, requires you to walk around the real world to play it which not only encourages more outgoing and exercise but it also develops social skills as people can play together and trade Pokémon amongst themselves.

Sign Language BSL

For people who are non-verbal or deaf. It’s also for people who need to communicate with someone who is non-verbal or deaf.

Sign BSL is an entire British Sign Language dictionary on your phone. Type a word into its search engine and it will bring up a list of videos showing you how to sign that word, it’s as simple as that.

Siri/Google Assistant

For people who need a quick, hands-free way to access features on their smartphone or tablet.

Siri and Google Assistant are the voice assistants of iOS and Android respectably. With just one voice command, you can tell your phone or tablet to do anything such as remind you of something, make a phone call or even asking for directions. The great thing about voice assistants is that they are already built into smartphones and tablets so take full advantage of them.

Smart Speaker

For people who need help with reminders, being organised, asking for information or controlling household items with their voice if the person can’t physically use those items.

Smart Speakers are a Star Trek fan’s dream: a small affordable computer that can be controlled by just your voice. Smart Speakers can be used to answer you questions, set reminders, listen to music and operate household items (these must be compatible with the smart speaker). They are ideal for those who find writing down reminders difficult to do as you can vocally set a reminder in seconds and the speaker will speak it out to you.
